If you
are planning a home renovation or large clean out project, chances
are you will need to rent a dumpster for your waste disposal needs.
While many people imagine dumpsters to be a large metal box that you
can throw anything in, that is not the case. There are certain items
which cannot be thrown in your rental dumpster, such as:
-
Toxic Waste. This
is a broad category and can cover many items such as asbestos,
batteries, fluorescent lights, and items which contain mercury such
as thermometers. All of these items are dangerous to the environment
and must be properly disposed of. -
Hazardous Materials.
This includes electronics and appliances such as televisions,
computers, and refrigerators. It also includes pesticides and other
types of poisons. -
Medical Waste.
Medical waste cannot be thrown
in the dumpster because it presents a hazard to both people and
wildlife. If a person was to come in contact with a used needle for
example, they may have to be heavily medicated for weeks to prevent
infection. -
Paints &
Solvents. If you are cleaning
out a garage, shed, attic, or basement, you may come across old cans
of paint and be tempted to throw them away – don’t do it. Paint
contains harmful chemicals that have been known to contaminate water
sources.
